KUALA LUMPUR, 4 Aug 2023 – Yayasan PETRONAS, the social impact arm of PETRONAS, today released its annual report for 2022, highlighting the foundation’s impact in uplifting over 115,000 lives across its three focus areas of Education, Community Wellbeing and Development, and Environment.
Carrying the theme “Empowering Change in Communities”, the Yayasan PETRONAS annual report encapsulates the foundation’s belief in empowering individuals and communities, to collectively drive transformative change for a sustainable future.
“Through our three core social impact pillars, we continued to unlock the potential of individuals, foster inclusive and resilient communities as well as preserve our environment. We remain deeply committed to creating impactful value for all, working towards ‘Empowering Change in Communities’ for the betterment of society,” Yayasan PETRONAS Chief Executive Officer, Shariah Nelly Francis said.
Yayasan PETRONAS had launched the Bridging the Online Learning Divide (BOLD) Programme that enriched existing remedial programmes in schools nationwide, to address learning loss among high-needs students from school closures during the pandemic. Through BOLD, the foundation assisted 2,000 students in primary schools across six states in the country with 1,600 volunteer tutors recruited and trained to deliver one-to-one remediation remotely, using a Literacy Toolkit by MYReaders.
During the year, the Foundation’s flagship teacher training programme Program Duta Guru also saw 253 teachers completing the two-year training programme and taking on roles as Duta Guru to advocate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in their respective schools, as part of a bid to increase national STEM enrolment.
As part of an effort to build thriving communities, Yayasan PETRONAS’ Memampankan Ekonomi Asas Rakyat (MEKAR) participants achieved livelihood breakthroughs through upskilling programmes with its strategic partners, Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) and East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC).
Another programme under the Foundation’s Community Well-being and Development pillar, the Sentuhan Kasih initiative, uplifted lives through Sentuhan Kasih Festive, Homes and Disaster Relief programmes. A total of RM3.37 million were channelled, in-kind contributions, aiding over 60,000 beneficiaries collectively in 2022.
Yayasan PETRONAS upheld its Environmental pillar’s approach of ecosystem restoration by supporting conservation efforts under the PETRONAS Walk4Trees Challenge. A total of 61,584 trees were planted across 11 states since the project began in September 2020, surpassing its initial target of 50,000 trees.
The programme also enriched the communities in the vicinity by creating awareness on nature conservation and upskilling them by providing the opportunity in setting up nurseries allowing them to earn additional income.
