JOHOR BAHRU, 29 January 2021 – Yayasan PETRONAS, in collaboration with Southern Region PETRONAS had activated its Sentuhan Kasih Disaster Relief programme this week and commenced a series of flood recovery activities to aid 1,600 affected individuals in Johor.
In the joint effort, RM35,000 worth of basic supplies and refurbishment items were distributed to assist affected households and improve several communal facilities, including the preschool and community hall in Kampung Laut and Kampung Sepakat Baru.
Chief Executive Officer of Yayasan PETRONAS Shariah Nelly Francis said: “Flood incidences add to the financial upheaval of B40 families who are trying to survive during this pandemic. Agensi Pengurusan Bencana Negara (NADMA) highlighted the need of many from these two villages who were displaced and were being sheltered at the Disaster Relief Centres (DRC).”
On Monday, Southern Region PETRONAS distributed furniture and learning aid, including plastic chairs, tables and whiteboards to the Ketua Kampung’s home at Kampung Sepakat Baru. Chairs and tables for children, a teacher’s desk with drawers, a whiteboard and a fridge were also delivered to Balai Raya Kampung Laut. The affected villagers in both sites also received an LPG cylinder tank and refill each.
Head of Southern Region PETRONAS Sazli Zakaria added: “We have been working closely with the Penghulu Mukim Tebrau, Hairul Hamid to assist the affected individuals and identify the communal facilities that require restoration and refurbishment. We hope this small contribution will help ease the burden of these impacted families so that they are able to resume daily duties as soon as possible.” The number of flood victims in Johor peaked at 7,439 in early January. However, many B40 families are still facing challenges to rebuild their homes and restore what was lost. Yayasan PETRONAS is working closely with NADMA and other non-governmental organisations to identify the needs of flood victims in other states.
In early January, PETRONAS Refinery and Petrochemical Corporation, with the help of Pejabat Penghulu Mukim Pengerang & Pantai Timur, contributed standing thermometers, sanitary kits, face masks, hand sanitisers and food items worth RM10,000 to the flood relief centres in Pengerang to aid 77 families who were evacuated from their houses in the area.
Meanwhile, PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad delivered a total of 236 cartons of mineral water to Kampung Laut and Kampung Sepakat Baru during the opening of the relief centres. Yayasan PETRONAS’ Sentuhan Kasih disaster relief initiative is a community well-being and development focus area in line with the PETRONAS Sustainability Agenda and the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals.
