Driving Education and Clean-Up Efforts towards New Plastics Economy
Hulu Langat, Selangor, 19 October – PETRONAS Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG) in collaboration with Yayasan PETRONAS today launched its Be Green programme with #recycleforlifecyle awareness campaign.
The annual programme, which started in 2013, was launched by the Minister of Housing Development and Local Government, YB Hajah Zuraida Kamaruddin at Institut Kemahiran Tinggi Belia Negara (IKTBN) Dusun Tua.
Also present were PCG Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer Datuk Sazali Hamzah and Yayasan PETRONAS’ Board of Trustees member Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr Zaini Ujang.
Speaking at the event, YB Hajah Zuraida said, “PCG’s efforts are in line with the Ministry’s, in increasing the community’s knowledge on environmental management. I applaud PCG for championing this cause and implementing the Be Green programme as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives for the environment.”
Datuk Sazali elaborated on PCG’s aspiration to become a solution partner in addressing plastic pollution and supporting the government to achieve its Circular Economy Roadmap through the ‘Malaysia Plastics Pact’. “Towards this end, we are currently collaborating with two industry players to evaluate the potential development of waste-to-energy and waste to crude naphtha plants.
“To further complement PCG’s New Plastics Economy (NPE) goals, PCG’s Be Green this year, which will be conducted nationwide has been enhanced to support NPE’s education and clean-up initiatives. We hope to encourage Malaysians to embrace #recycleforlifecycle, the awareness campaign that will run up to next year,” he added.
At the launch, more than 500 volunteers comprising community members, IKTBN students and PETRONAS employees participated in the clean-up of Sungai Langat and tree-planting.
They also completed a mural painting depicting the aspiration for Sungai Langat’s future as well as its surrounding areas, followed by segregating the waste collected for the recycling centre.
Earlier, PCG collaborated with Recycle Community Malaysia Lestari, an environmental-based non-governmental organisation to educate over 900 students on the benefits of 3R (Reduce, Reuse & Recycle) and effective plastics usage.
The programme is anchored upon two objectives:
- Educate the community on proper waste collection and segregation and keeping the area clean through 3R education, focusing on anti-littering, as well as benefits and impact of plastics usage on the environment.
- Raise awareness on preserving clean rivers as a raw water source. Sungai Langat marks the first location for clean-up activities, to be followed later by Kertih, Bintulu and Kuantan. The clean-up of Sungai Langat will be carried out in phases over five years.
At the same time in a nearby village, Kampung Kuala Pangsun, PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (PDB) carried out its Water For Life programme. PDB, together with the Malaysian Nature Society installed over 7,000 metres of piping system from Sungai Langat dam, repaired the dam and its filtration system to allow villagers to enjoy clean uninterrupted water supply. The Water For Life programme is one of PDB’s key CSR initiatives aimed at providing local communities with access to clean water.
Both PCG’s Be Green and PDB’s Water For Life support Yayasan PETRONAS’ mission to enrich lives for a sustainable future. These programmes extend the multiple environmental conservation and community livelihood programmes that Yayasan PETRONAS has been consistently supporting throughout the country.
